I just had an extraction/implant surgery, is there anything I need to do or avoid?

Following post-op instructions after an extraction or dental implant surgery is extremely important in ensuring your mouth heals quickly and properly. Below are links to our office's post-op instructions for extractions and implants:

Specifically, using ice every 15 minutes for the first 24 hours after surgery may help reduce swelling in the area, a common side effect of these surgeries.

Patients should avoid using straws for at least a week following their procedure. Suction from using straws can put pressure on the surgical site and can potentially cause a painful condition called dry socket.

Additionally, patients should avoid smoking in any capacity, but most importantly during the first 24 hours after surgery. Smoking can increase your risk of implant failure significantly and cause dry socket in patients that had extractions. Avoiding tobacco products two weeks before the start of surgery and eight weeks after can reverse some of the side effects of smoking and increase your chances at having a successful procedure.
